How the Life Palace and Body Palace differ
The Life Palace — Ming Gong, 命宮 — is the primary reference point of a natal Zi Wei Dou Shu chart. It begins an investigation into stable priorities, ways of responding and how experience is organised. It is not a complete personality label: its stars must be connected to the opposite Palace, the San Fang Si Zheng triad, the Four Transformations and the other areas of life.
The Body Palace — Shen Gong, 身宮 — is neither the physical body nor a separate thirteenth cell. It is an extra focus that always overlays an existing Palace. It helps ask where the chart's inner pattern becomes especially visible through action, responsibility and the allocation of effort.
How Ming Gong and Shen Gong are calculated
Both positions depend on the lunar birth month and the Earthly Branch of the birth hour. The month and hour are counted in different directions for Ming Gong and in the same direction for Shen Gong. An accurate hour therefore affects both markers and can change the geometry on which the rest of the reading is built.
Green Jade marks the Life Palace with 命 and the Body Palace with 身. Verify the date, local time, place and time zone before reading. If the birth falls near a two-hour Chinese time boundary, or the recorded time is approximate, compare plausible versions and label conclusions as provisional.
The six possible Body Palace placements
Shen Gong can overlay only one of six Palaces. This restriction follows from the calculation itself. A Palace name does not predict an event; it identifies the area to which observations and practical questions can be directed.
命 · Life Palace
Orientation and action concentrate in one place. Ask how directly stated priorities become behaviour, and where a more flexible response would help.
夫妻 · Spouse Palace
Practical focus runs through partnership, agreements and mutual roles. This promises neither marriage nor compatibility; it invites attention to how other people participate in decisions.
財帛 · Wealth Palace
Resource management, exchange and practical value become visible. The placement does not guarantee income; it helps examine how time, money and opportunities are allocated.
遷移 · Travel Palace
Patterns emerge through the outer environment, movement, public contact and adaptation. Ask which conditions broaden choice and which require constant adjustment.
官祿 · Career Palace
Attention falls on contribution, duty, craft and public role. This is not a prescribed profession or a promise of status: stars and Palace links refine the mode of participation.
福德 · Wellbeing Palace
Inner priorities, restoration and meaning receive extra focus. The question is not a fixed “happiness score,” but which modes of living support clarity and resilience.
When the Life and Body Palaces are the same
When 命 and 身 coincide, the configuration is called Ming Shen Tong Gong — 命身同宮. It concentrates the reading on one set of stars and relationships: initial orientation and practical engagement are examined through the same point in the chart.
The match does not automatically make the chart stronger, luckier or easier. A supported structure may look consistent; a tense structure may identify a theme revisited especially often. In either case, check the opposite Palace, the connected triad and the Four Transformations before drawing a conclusion.
How to read the Life and Body Palaces together
Verify the input
Confirm date, place, time zone and the accuracy of the recorded time. Otherwise the comparison begins with an uncertain chart.
Locate 命 and 身
Record the Palaces they occupy and whether they coincide. Separate calculation from interpretation before assigning meaning.
Read the stars in Ming Gong
Note the Major Stars, supporting stars and brightness. Form several possible expressions rather than one fixed type.
Read the Palace hosting Shen
Combine its life area with its stars. Ask where effort is actually invested and where the person accepts more responsibility.
Build San Fang Si Zheng
Add the opposite Palace and connected triad for both points. This gives each local symbol support, counterweight and structural context.
Add transformations and timing
Check Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji. Read the natal chart, ten-year period and annual layer in sequence rather than merging them.
The result should become a testable question: “When does this mode of action help, where does it create strain, and what choices are available now?” A Palace placement cannot guarantee a profession, relationship, wealth or future event.
When Ming Gong or the Shen host has no Major Star
An empty Palace only means that none of the Fourteen Major Stars occupies that cell. It does not mean an absent identity, will or life theme. Supporting stars, the opposite Palace, connected triad and Four Transformations remain part of the reading.
Some schools emphasise “borrowing” Major Stars from the opposite Palace. Apply that technique consistently within one school and do not copy the opposite meaning literally. It adds context; it does not replace an empty Palace with a finished portrait.
Five common mistakes
Treating Shen as the Health Palace
身 can mean “body,” but here it is a structural marker. Health has its own Palace and must never be used as a medical diagnosis.
Replacing Ming with Shen
Shen adds a focus of action; it does not cancel the natal viewpoint. Look for the relationship between the two rather than choosing a winner.
Assigning a fixed age
Some schools emphasise Shen later in life, but there is no universal switch point. Do not turn a school convention into a compulsory rule.
Reading only the Palace name
A Career placement guarantees no career outcome, and a Spouse placement predicts no relationship event. Stars, links and lived circumstances supply the content.
Ignoring an hour boundary
A time error can move both markers. Compare plausible charts before detailed interpretation when the source time is uncertain.
Sources, terms and school differences
命宮 and 身宮, the Twelve Palaces and their calculation belong to the traditional framework of Zi Wei Dou Shu. English sources use “Life Palace” or sometimes “Destiny Palace” for 命宮, and “Body Palace” for 身宮. This page follows Green Jade's interface terminology.
Schools may place different interpretive emphasis on Shen, describing acquired behaviour, maturity or the area where effort is applied. Keep the stable calculation rule separate from an author's interpretive layer. The classical terminology can be checked in the Complete Compendium of Zi Wei Dou Shu; modern readings should still name their school and context.

Is the Body Palace a thirteenth Palace?
