The chart begins before calculation
A Qi Men question chart uses a specific moment, yet interpretation starts by defining the subject. One Palace may represent the asker, another person, a document, action or result. Without a clear request, 用神 selection becomes arbitrary.
“What awaits me?” has no action, horizon or test. Almost any story can be fitted afterwards. Ask what supports a particular step, where the obstacle lies and which evidence should trigger a review.
A working question formula
Situation
Name the context: negotiation, trip, launch or supplier choice.
Action
State what is considered: sign, postpone, contact, compare or reroute.
Horizon
Set the period in which an observable result matters.
Criterion
Define evidence: agreed terms, a reply, deadline or acceptable risk.
Template: “What supports [action] in [situation] by [horizon], and which risk should be checked first?” It allows strategy instead of magical yes or no.
From vague to testable

Ask about another person through an action available to you: conversation, agreement or fact checking. A chart does not read private thoughts or replace consent.
Which moment to use
For a question chart, use the moment when the request became clear and was accepted for consideration. Choose the rule first and apply it consistently rather than recasting until a pleasant answer appears.
Election of a future action is different: compare allowed times after real constraints are defined. Never choose an unsafe route because a symbolic direction looks strong.
How the question selects 用神
用神 is the working indicator for a participant, object or objective. Wording decides what to compare: asker and employer, buyer and property, initiator and result. Then locate their Palaces and relationships.

Responsible boundaries
- do not request a medical diagnosis;
- do not take financial risk without evidence and qualified advice;
- do not use a chart to surveil, pressure or bypass consent;
- do not ask for inevitable death, crime or private thoughts;
- do not repeat until receiving a desired answer;
- record facts that could change the decision.
