What Da Yun means in BaZi

Da Yun (大運) is translated as Major Luck, Luck Pillars or ten-year cycles. It is a sequence calculated for an individual chart. Each cycle has a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, just like a natal Pillar, and contributes temporary elements and relationships for roughly ten years.

The word “luck” does not promise a fortunate decade. A cycle may support one function, place more weight on another or bring an existing tension into clearer view. A responsible question is therefore not “Will this be a good decade?” but “Which themes and ways of acting become more prominent when this Pillar meets my natal chart?”

Natal chart, Da Yun and Liu Nian: the difference

BaZi timing uses more than one scale. The natal chart remains the reference system. Da Yun adds the decade-scale background, while Liu Nian (流年) adds the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of one calendar year. The annual Pillar is shared by everyone, but it meets a different natal chart and active Luck Pillar in each case. This is why a universal “forecast for everyone born under one sign” does not follow BaZi logic.

Read from the largest frame to the smallest. Starting with a year alone can turn one symbol into an invented event and remove it from the chart-specific relationship that gives it meaning.

How the Da Yun sequence is calculated

The sequence develops from the Month Pillar. In the rule used by Green Jade, movement through the sexagenary cycle goes forward for a male born in a Yang year or a female born in a Yin year, and backward for a male born in a Yin year or a female born in a Yang year. The starting age is derived from the distance between the birth moment and the relevant solar-term boundary.

The first Luck Pillar therefore does not have to start on a birthday or exactly at age ten. A calculation may show years and months. Calculators can differ slightly when they use different ephemerides, time-zone records, solar-term rules or rounding. Births close to a boundary deserve an input review, including the choices explained in the true solar time guide.

What is compared across the timing layers

The Stems of the Luck Pillar and year are related to the Day Master through the Ten Gods. These describe functions such as resource, peers, output, manageable results, rules and responsibility. The next check is the Five Elements balance. A temporary element may support a weak link, provide an outlet for accumulated strength or add pressure to an already overloaded part of the structure.

Earthly Branches are reviewed for combinations, clashes, harms, punishments and other configurations. The presence of an interaction is not an event. It indicates that part of the structure has become more active and deserves comparison with the person’s actual circumstances.

A cycle transition is not an on-off switch

The change date matters for calculation, but real processes rarely reverse overnight. Work, relationships, health and long projects all have inertia. It is more useful to observe a transition window: which earlier demands are completing, which new conditions repeat and whether the person’s way of allocating effort is actually changing.

A repeated sign, a Branch clash or a year that echoes part of the natal chart may be treated as a strong marker. It justifies closer analysis, not a declaration of inevitable success or crisis. The more consequential the decision, the more important it is to use facts, appropriate professional advice and more than one scenario instead of relying on a single symbol.
