The clock records civil time. The chart needs the local solar moment

True solar time corrects the recorded birth time for the actual position of the Sun at the birthplace. Near a two-hour boundary, that correction may change the Hour Pillar.

Civil time and solar time are different

Time zones make daily life practical by assigning one official clock to a wide geographic region. The Sun, however, reaches its highest point at different moments for different longitudes. A city east of the time-zone meridian experiences local solar noon earlier; a city west of it experiences solar noon later. Historical changes such as daylight saving time and government time-zone reforms can add another layer.

What true solar time corrects

A robust calculation begins with the local recorded date and time, resolves the historical time-zone offset for that place and converts the moment consistently. It then applies a longitude correction relative to the standard meridian and the equation of time, which reflects variation in the apparent motion of the Sun during the year. The result is the true solar time used to assign the traditional two-hour period.

  1. Birthplace. Obtain reliable latitude and longitude rather than using the capital of a country.
  2. Historical time zone. Use the offset that actually applied on the birth date.
  3. Longitude correction. Adjust the official zone time toward local mean solar time.
  4. Equation of time. Account for the seasonal difference between mean and apparent solar time.
  5. Boundary check. Determine whether the correction crosses into another traditional hour.

When the correction matters most

If the recorded time is well inside a two-hour period, a modest correction may leave the Hour Pillar unchanged. If the birth occurred near a boundary, even twenty or thirty minutes can move the chart into the previous or next period. The correction can also affect the date around midnight, depending on the school and calculation convention. That is why the report should show both the entered civil time and the calculated solar time.

Unknown or approximate birth time

When the time is unknown, the Year, Month and Day Pillars can still be calculated, but the Hour Pillar and time-sensitive conclusions must be marked as uncertain. If relatives remember only “early morning” or “after lunch,” several candidate hours can be compared, yet this is not the same as a verified time. A service should never present a guessed Hour Pillar as fact.

Common calculation errors

Typical mistakes include applying the current time zone to a historical birth, correcting for longitude twice, ignoring daylight saving time, using the birthplace name without reliable coordinates or silently replacing an unknown time with noon. Another error is treating the beginning of a calendar month as the BaZi month boundary; the system uses solar terms instead.

What precision can and cannot do

Accurate astronomy improves the internal consistency of the chart. It does not make a metaphysical interpretation a guaranteed prediction of events. Precision should reduce avoidable technical error, show assumptions and help the reader understand which conclusions depend on the Hour Pillar.

Before calculating: enter the birthplace as precisely as possible and note whether the recorded time comes from an official document or family memory.
